Class 2 is a mixed Year 3 and 4 class, the teacher is Rebecca Smart. Children are given the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities as part of the curriculum. These include our Forest Schools programme and swimming lessons.

One of the highlights of the year is our partnership project with Argyle School in London. This project is led by our Year 4. The project includes a range of exciting events such as a camp out on our school field, providing tours of Bonsall village and a visit to Argyle School in Central London.

Romans in Chesterfield – School Trip

We visited Chesterfield to learn more about what our local area was like in the time of the Romans.

First, we learnt about how archaeologists find out about the past by investigating historical objects.

We looked at Roman coins and created some observational drawings.

We enjoyed trying on Roman clothing and having a go with the shield and gladius (sword).

There was even time for some field work too, we visited the site of the Roman fort in Chesterfield town centre and measured its size using a trundle wheel. We learnt about Roman architecture and had a go at spotting and drawing, pediments, entablatures and columns on buildings like the town hall.

Year 4 visit to Argyle Primary School, London

Following on from our Bonsall campout with Argyle pupils in May. Year 4 visited Argyle School in Central London for the final part of our urban/rural comparison project. The Year 4 enjoyed a morning touring the school, sharing in performances, getting stuck into a coordinates geography challenge and enjoying the playground. After lunch, we were taken on a tour of the area around Kings Cross, including a quick stop at platform 9 and three quarters, google headquarters, the local canal and parks. We had a fabulous day and learnt a lot about life in an urban area of Britain.

Learning in RE

We recently visited St James Church as part of our RE project – we were looking for how our community displays their Christian faith. Here are some pictures from our visit….

Class 2 have been exploring the Stone Age in history. Year 4 had great fun at forest school, imagining what it was like to live in the Stone Age! They used flint and steel to light fires and they made clay pots. They also made blackberry paint and stone axes.

We have had a busy start to the year in Class 2

As part of our History lessons, we have learnt about changes in Bronze Age Britain too, including pottery made by the Beaker People. We even had a go at creating own Bronze Age pottery.

We also took part in Harvest Festival, we wrote an Autumn Poem, which we read aloud as part of the service at St James Church. Here is our Autumn poem….

Autumn by Year 3 and 4!

Robins and blackbirds flying in the air,

As they sing a chorus of pretty songs,

Squirrels leaping tree to tree collecting acorns,

Then busily burying their nut for winter,

Trees getting weaker,

As their leaves change from emerald green to golden yellow,

Sycamore seeds swirl and twirl,

As leaves pirouette on the breeze,

Brown spikey hedgehogs hunting for a tasty treat,

Before they curl up snug in a pile of leaves,

We search for chestnut shells in the windy woods,

Later I hunt for chocolate brown conkers with my friends,

Sausage dogs snuggling in their warm, winter coats,

Rain falls softly on farmer’s fields,

Orangey Pumpkins ready to harvest,

As Brussel sprouts fatten for Christmas.

Our RE learning has been based around the big question “What is the Trinity?” to show our understanding of The Holy Trinity, we have designed our own mini sculptures, we had great fun making them! Please come and see our display in school!

We have also taken part in the school tree planting afternoon and the cluster cross country. Please visit the news page to find out more!

Year 4 Camp out with Argyle School Pupils

The Year 4 pupils have had a fantastic time hosting Year 4 pupils from Argyle Primary School for our annual campout. The children enjoyed a forest school session, science experiments, team building tasks and village tours and a bell ringing session at St James Chruch before they camped out on the school field. A big thankyou to all involved in running the event! The Argyle exchange project forms an important part of our Lower Key Stage 2 curriculum, as well as key learning in Englich, Science, Geography and Local History, it provides our pupils with an opportunity to experience the multicultural nature of Britain today in line with our aims and values statement: “To ensure that our children are prepared for their responsibilities as part of society.”

Investigating with Magnets

Our Science topic is magnets and forces.

Our learning has included exploring magnetic and non-magnetic materials and comparing the strength of different magnets. We have had a great time working practically and carrying out experiments!

Class 2 Romans Trip

We visited Chesterfield to learn all about Romans. We had a great time learning about Roman clothing and investigating how historians find out about the past.

We got chance to carry out some fieldwork and measure the position of the Roman Fort in Chesterfield too!
