Courageous Advocacy

At Bonsall CE VA Primary we are courageous advocates for the common good. We recognise that life is full of ups and downs and that at times all people will face challenges that they need help and support overcoming. It is important for our children to appreciate their role as part of a community; to take responsibility; to be able to look after themselves and to foster an understanding of their importance, impact and influence in the world. Here are some of the ways our school community are courageous advocates:

Supporting charities

Our school community raises money for a number of different charities during the year. Our Year 6 play a leading role in planning and organising these fundraising events.

We also support a number of local charities through our activities, for example donations at our Harvest Festival support local food banks at:

  • Derby Refugee Forum and Food Bank
  • St James Food Bank

Ukraine Aid Appeal

Our Year 5 and 6 have chosen to partner with a local aid appeal to support Ukrainian families – the children organised a very successful collection of food and clothing donations which were delivered to the Ukraine border. Following this success, the children chose to hold an afternoon tea to raise funds to provide further support to the people of Ukraine. Here is a presentation all about their project.

Helping Hands

Acts of kindness have the potential to make the world a happier place to be. An act of kindness can boost feelings of confidence, being in control, happiness and optimism. They may also encourage others to repeat the good deeds they’ve experienced themselves – contributing to a more positive community.

We celebrate acts of kindness within our school as part of our Friday Certificates Assembly with special Helping Hands Awards. These can be written by staff, but can also be given by children too.

Protecting God’s Wonderful World

God has trusted us with a beautiful world to look after that we should be thankful for. Preserving and protecting nature isn’t just about trees and birds but is also paramount to human survival. At Bonsall Primary, we understand how important it is to look after our planet. We work together to reduce the impact that we have and learn about how we can look after nature all around us.

Our Green Projects

Encouraging environmentally friendly choices – Year 3 and 4

Class 2 children worked hard to spread the word about greener choices we can all make to help the environment. The children created posters which they displayed in school along with this message which they wrote for the school newsletter….

“A message from Class 2: We have been learning about changing environments in our Science lessons. We have found out how we can help look after the environment. Here are our top tips:

  • Use less plastic by having refillable bottles and containers
  • Recycle as much as you can
  • Use less electricity by turning off lights and devices when you’re not using them
  • Plant trees or a wildflower garden
  • Try to walk more for short journeys and use your car less

Please try your best to have a go at some of these things. We have designed some posters, to help remind everyone of our top tips from Class 2.

Tree planting with Wilder Bonsall

We held a tree planting afternoon to refresh our nature trail area. With support from members of the local community, parents and families, along with some expertise from the Wilder Bonsall group we spent a fun afternoon working in our dinner groups planting new trees in our school grounds. Funding for the project was kindly provided by Tarmac.

Bee and Butterfly friendly planting at Forest Schools

Older children worked with the PTFA and Hollie’s Farm to plant butterfly and bee friendly plants to enhance our school grounds.

Changing minds through our Art!

Year 5 and 6 children created big art to share their message and reduce plastic use as part of our projects for Bonsall Arts Trail.

Links within our local community

We recognise that it is important to build strong links with those within our local community. To enhance the lives of those who live within our village. We work hard to maintain links which enable us to share our learning experiences with local people. We do this by:

  • Year 6 children visiting monthly Community Luncheon
  • Year 6 monthly articles for Mutterings
  • Food parcels given to local people at Harvest
  • Participation in village events – Carnival, Arts Trail, Remembrance Service, displays at St James’ Church
