PSHE at Bonsall CE (VA) Primary School

Bonsall CE (VA) Primary School’s PSHE curriculum aims to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. Through lessons and wider school life, pupils develop the character traits within the school’s vision and ethos, they need to build a positive sense of self, enabling them to contribute responsibly and positively to society. The curriculum plan has been designed to take account of guidance from the national curriculum, and the PSHE association. Teachers carefully tailor learning to reflect the needs of pupils, the context of the school and local community.

Learning is taught across 6 units, which are delivered each year, ensuring the curriculum is progressive and pupils have opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills during each year of their education. A safe space is created within lessons, where pupils are encouraged to share their views and ideas, listen and respond respectfully to the views of others, ask questions, accept difference and disagree well.

A range of learning opportunities are provided, including role play, group discussions, scenarios, media, story telling and books and the arts.

All pupils take part in Forest School sessions. By the end of the year during their sessions, objectives across all areas of PSHE are developed, allowing the application of skills and knowledge to real life scenarios where team work and positive relationships with their peers are essential.

PSHE learning is enhanced through carefully planned enrichment opportunities including a partnership with Argyle Primary School in Central London, Bikeability sessions for older pupils and visits from police and fire services, which make meaningful real-life links.

Alongside the taught curriculum, every opportunity is sought to enable pupils to apply their knowledge and skills within the everyday life of the school. Older pupils have responsibility for role modelling behaviour and supporting younger pupils during lunchtimes and clubs. Older pupils have the opportunity to make links with senior citizens luncheon and plan fundraising events for charitable causes on a national and international level. Sporting opportunities are used to ensure pupils are respectful and accepting of all.
